Health and Medication Advice

You may wish to take a basic first aid kit with you; these are available from chemists, pharmacies and some supermarkets.

Take high-factor sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent if you are travelling in hot climates.

We request that you bring the name, address and telephone number of your GP as this is usually required by insurance companies if you become unwell.

Please carry any medication in your hand luggage. It is also advisable to take copies of any regular prescriptions you may take.

Whilst the travelling schedule on our holidays shall impose no problems for people of any age in normal physical health, we should like to point out that we visit many historical sites and often enjoy walking tours of various places of interest. Some holidays, therefore, may not be suitable for clients of greatly impaired mobility. If you have greatly impaired mobility then please contact us for further advice.

Irish citizens are entitled to free or reduced cost emergency treatment if they are taken ill or have an accident during their holiday. However, this is usually only available within the state health service; a number of hospitals and doctors only work in the private sector.

Although you will have obtained travel insurance, it is important that you also obtain an EU-wide European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which is used by European citizens to prove their entitlement to free or reduced cost emergency medical treatment during temporary stay in other European countries.

The EHIC is valid for five years and can be applied for online at www.ehic.ie

We would request that you bring the name, address and telephone number of your GP as this is usually required by insurance companies if you become unwell.

If you have a physical disability or are undergoing medical treatment that may affect your ability to do the tour, and which you have not already informed us about, you must let us know in writing now. For river cruising we will be able to advise you if the ship is equipped to meet your needs. If you do not inform us, the ship’s Captain may refuse passage or your travel insurance may become invalid.

Risk of disease, hygiene standards and health facilities abroad can vary considerably from what we are used to in the UK. We therefore recommend that you obtain health advice well before your departure.

We strongly suggest that you check with your GP or travel clinic for any immunisations required (country specific advice is also available from www.dfa.ie/travel/travel-advice). You should already have Polio, Diphtheria, Typhoid, Hepatitis A and Tetanus vaccinations - but we would advise that you check with your GP as you may need a booster dose.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): sitting immobile for long periods of time in aircraft, trains or coaches may increase the risk of DVT. Recent major surgery or hip/knee replacement can also increase DVT risk. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, move your ankles and toes and get up and walk around regularly. For more information, see your GP or visit www.hse.ie/eng/health/az/t/thrombosis/introduction.

Malaria is a serious disease and the country/countries to which you are travelling may be classified as a risk area.

Health Concerns

If you have any concerns about your health whilst on tour please see your tour manager. They will be able to advise you about chemists and availability of doctors, etc.

There will be occasions when the tour manager isn’t immediately available and in this case staff at hotel receptions can usually be very helpful. In an emergency you could always phone our emergency number as issued on your itinerary.
