River Cruises in China

A river cruise in China promises to be like no other, full of adventure and new experiences that are certain to stay with you for life. What else would you expect in a country of over 1.4 billion people with a rich and colourful history that dates back to pre-historic times? One of the oldest civilisations in the world, it’s full of historic sites and fascinating places to visit and explore, and a river cruise in China is a journey you’ll never forget.

It was ruled over for centuries by various dynasties and empires, including the Qin dynasty from 200 years BC, which united (or rather, conquered) the country for the first time, and which has left a legacy in the form of the Great Wall and the Terracotta Army. Another famous dynasty whose name remains in common use today was the Ming dynasty, under which arts and culture flourished, not least the famous ceramics and porcelains that are still so prized in the 21st Century.

The 20th Century saw much turmoil in China, including the end of the imperial times in 1912 with the arrival of the Chinese Republic, which was overthrown by the People’s Republic of China when the Communist Party rose to power in 1949. Chairman Mao’s rule turned the country into the China that we know today, with the population exploding from 550 million to over 900 million.

Our tour to China offers all of the best that this incredible country has to offer: The Great Wall, the Terracotta Army, the Temple of Heaven and the Jade Buddha temple, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and more. As part of our China tour, you’ll cross the country by rail, air and water, enjoying a 7-night river cruise on the famous Yangtze River and the beautiful Li River, seeing so much more of China than just the usual tourist destinations.

How else could you see the majestic splendour of the Shibaozhai Pagoda, 12 storeys of traditional Chinese architecture rising up and over a cliff face, or the colossal Three Gorges Dam, which may be a lot less attractive but still has to be seen to be believed? For a less industrial sight, the Chengdu Panda Centre gets you closer to the iconic bear species so synonymous with China.

Throughout its long history, China has been a country full of wonder and spectacle and our China tour is tailored for couples and groups as well as solo travellers, giving you the chance to be guided around the essential sights and experiences of one of the biggest and most important countries in the world.
